cuba

Aside from Castro and the revolution, when people think of Cuba and Havana, they think of the old American cars.  Until the revolution in 1959, American cars were abundant on the island.  But after the revolution, car imports virtually stopped, so the people were forced to maintain the cars they had.  Throughout Cuba, you see cars from the 1940s and 1950s.  Now many are taxis, but some are privately owned.  Clearly, the Cubans have figured out how to keep the cars running, because they are.  Some are in really great shape, and others not so great.

A note on the photos below.  In several of the photos, parts of the image are blurry.  That is purposeful.  The technique is know as “pan & blur.”  The shutter is open as you track the car.  If you track the car’s speed exactly, the car (or parts of it) are in focus while other parts of the image are blurry.  So, it’s not your eyes!
