Dominican Republic

Our only real opportunity to experience Dominican culture occurred in Santo Domingo.  We visited the colonial section of the city as well as Santa Maria church - the first catholic church in the Americas.  We spent time walking the streets and visited the National pantheon which houses the tombs of the Dominican Republic’s great leaders.  There, we saw a changing of the guard.  We also visited Plaza Espana which, at one end, has the hsitoric palace of Alcazar de Diego Colon.  We ended our visit at the street market in Little Haiti.

Among the photos below are bottles for sale in Little Haiti.  These bottles contain tree bark.  Into the bottles is placed a mixture of rum, red wine and honey and the resultant drink is called “mamajuana.”  I tried it and it packed a punch.  It is a favorite drink of Dominican men.

Although short, This part of the trip was interesting.
