Casablanca is in western Morocco, located on the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 2.3 million people and is Morocco's largest city as well as its chief port. Casablanca is considered the economic and business center of Morocco, while the political capital city of Morocco is Rabat.
We were in Casablanca for a relatively short period of time. The highlight of our stay was to the Hassan II Mosque - the largest mosque in the world. Open in the 1993, more than 25,000 worshippers may be accommodated at any one time. Beneath the main prayer hall is the Ablution Room with 41 fountains where muslims wash before prayer. Muslims pray 5 times a day. At the appointed time, they are called to prayer using loudspeakers atop the minarets of the mosque. When the calls begin, it’s a chorus that reverberates across the city.
We also visited the grounds of the King’s Palace, Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral, the Mahkama Du Pacha - a parliamentary building housing the court of justice, and a local marketplace.
