El Jadida is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. It has a population of 150,000 and has massive Portuguese walls of hewn stone. El Jadida was seized in 1502 by the Portuguese, and they controlled this city until 1769, when it was abandoned.
The Portuguese Fortification was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered an outstanding example of the interchange of influences between European and Moroccan cultures. One of the most the most important buildings from the Portuguese period is the cistern - a building to catch and store rainwater.
In addition to the Portuguese fortification, El Jadida is an active fishing port and is considered a very desirable weekend vacation destination for Moroccans living in Casablanca - about 2 hours away.
