Southern New Mexico, like most of the state, is desert chaparral and a diverse set of photographic locations can be found south of Albequerque.  At the southern most point, about four hours south  near the city of Alamagordo is White Sands national Monument.  Yes, it is a part of a military proving ground, but the monument contains beautiful sand dunes and offers wonderful landscape photography opportunities.

Going north two hours back toward Albequerque is Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge where large numbers of snow geese and sand hill craines winter .

And finally, the Very Large Array radio is a complex of 27 radio telescopes spread over 25 miles of desert scrub.  The complex has a visitors center near one of the radio telescopes and photography is both allowed and encouraged.
