O‘ahu, known as "The Gathering Place," is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is home to about two-thirds of the population of the U.S. state of Hawai’i. The state capital, Honolulu, is on O’ahu's southeast coast.
O’ahu is 44 miles long and 30 miles across. Its shoreline is 227 miles long. Including small associated islands such as Ford Island and the islands in Kāneohe Bay and off the eastern coast, its area is 596.7 square miles , making it the 20th largest island in the United States.
The island is composed of two separate shield volcanoes. The highest point is Ka'ala in the Waianae Range, rising to 4,003 feet above sea level.
In May 2009, I made another trip to Hawai’i to see family. They live on O’hau and the visit was truly a family affair. That having been said, I did get some beach time and some time to shoot. Among the images is below an outrigger canoe that was built by a member of our family through marriage. He took some of us outrigger canoe surfing on Waikiki beach. It was a real experience. Thanks James.
